Weather Words: Move Like the Sky
Category: Games & Activities · 1-page printable PDF · Ages F-2 · Free for ConnectedPE members
A movement literacy card for Foundation–Year 2 built on six weather-themed prompts: Cloud Float, Rain Drum, Wind Swirl, Lightning Flash, Frost Freeze and Rainbow Arch. Each prompt asks young movers to interpret weather as movement — exploring body, space and energy in the tradition of Laban's movement qualities.
The weather frame gives abstract movement qualities concrete anchors a five-year-old already understands: lightning is sudden and sharp, clouds are slow and light, frost is stillness itself. Students build expressive vocabulary — level, time, weight, flow and shape — while practising the control and stillness that underpin all later movement learning. Seed, Sprout and Tree levels let each child choose their challenge. Mapped to AC9HPEF02 and AC9HPEY202.
One page, zero equipment, indoors or out. Use it for creative-movement lessons, dance-unit warm-ups, or classroom brain breaks with genuine curriculum substance.
What students learn
Students explore movement qualities — level, time, weight, flow and shape — by interpreting weather prompts. They build expressive movement vocabulary, practise stillness and control, and self-select a challenge level (Seed, Sprout or Tree) that matches their confidence.
