Drop the Beat

Drop the Beat is a Choreography Lab for ages 10–16: a 16-move Move Bank spanning the four elements of dance — Actions (Step-Touch, Kick-Ball-Change), Space (Level Change, Pathway Slide), Dynamics (Sharp Hit, Slow-Mo, Explode) and Relationships (Unison, Canon, Mirror, Contrast) — plus a worked sample 8-count students are told to steal, then rebuild as their own.
Anchoring composition in counts of 8 gives non-dancers a concrete scaffold, and the Gold standard is explicit: a routine that uses all four elements, not just repeated actions. Page 2 is the lab — two 8-count builder grids where every move is tagged by element, a stage-view formation designer, a canon-versus-unison comparison, and a peer appraisal panel scoring timing, elements and performance with glow-and-grow feedback.
Needs music with a clear beat, open space and a pencil. Rhythm Rockets Warm-Up Sequence Card makes the ideal lesson opener, and the Easy Rubric widget turns the final performances into quick structured assessment.
What students learn
Create and perform dance sequences using the elements of movement — actions, space, dynamics and relationships — building an eight-count routine, applying formations such as unison, canon, mirror and contrast, and appraising performances.
