Wrist Wise: Can You Trust Your Tracker?

Category: Fitness · 1-page printable PDF · Ages 5-6, 7-8, 9-10 · Free for ConnectedPE members

Wrist Wise is a one-page data literacy card that asks students whether their fitness tracker's numbers are solid or guesses. Section 1 explains the sensors: green light for pulse, motion for steps, satellites for distance. Section 2 is the Trust-O-Meter: twelve tracker claims (resting heart rate, calories burned, sleep score, stress level, pushing a trolley as steps, heart rate with a loose strap) to sort as R Pretty Reliable, G Takes a Guess or B Be Careful, each with a because line.

Section 3 is a Pulse Showdown that puts the sorting to the test: students count their own pulse by hand, compare it with a tracker or partner's count and rate the gap. Four Wise Rules close it out: trends over single numbers, the talk test, what a watch cannot measure, and asking before sharing data.

Pencil only, no device needed, with Level Up (invent a feature that fixes a Be Careful claim) and Make It Easier lines. Suits Years 5–10 fitness and digital wellbeing units. Pairs with Zone Chaser and the Cardio Graph Worksheet.

What students learn

Students learn how wearable trackers sense pulse, steps and distance, then evaluate twelve tracker claims for reliability, sorting each as pretty reliable, a guess or easy to get wrong and justifying the call. They test the technology against their own body by hand-counting a pulse and comparing it with a tracker or partner, and apply four rules for using fitness data wisely: watch trends rather than single numbers, trust how the body feels and the talk test, recognise what a watch cannot measure such as sleep quality and friendship, and ask before sharing personal data. The activity builds critical health literacy, understanding of heart rate and exertion, and awareness of digital privacy.
