Track Ready - The Athletics Carnival Playbook
Category: Sport Skills · 2-page printable PDF · Ages 5-6, 7-8, 9-10 · Free for ConnectedPE members
A two-page athletics carnival preparation card for Years 5–10 that turns carnival season from a participation event into a learning sequence. Page one covers six events — 100m sprint, 800m, long jump, high jump, shot put and 4×100m relay — each with a coaching cue, a 60-second drill and a success indicator, so students arrive at carnival day having actually prepared.
Page two is the Carnival Day Playbook: a warm-up routine, a 4-step mental routine for the marshalling area, a PB tracker, self-rating rubric, reflection prompts and a SMART goal builder. The mental-skills layer is the quiet differentiator — most students have never been taught what to do with pre-race nerves. Mapped across AC9HPEY604–807.
Print one per student in the weeks before carnival: the drills fill lesson warm-ups, the playbook travels to the event, and the PB tracker turns results into next year's goals.
What students learn
Students prepare for an athletics carnival by practising event-specific technique cues and short drills across sprints, endurance, field events, and relay. They use a PB tracker, self-rating rubric, mental routine, and SMART goal-setting framework to build self-management, reflection, and personal best progression.
Topics: athletics, carnival, sprints, endurance, long-jump, high-jump, shot-put, relay, pb-tracker, smart-goals, self-assessment, mental-skills
