Rhythmic Gymnastics Unit Activities
Category: Sport Skills · 3-page printable PDF · Ages 3-4, 5-6, 7-8 · Free for ConnectedPE members
A comprehensive rhythmic gymnastics unit that brings ropes, hoops, balls and ribbons out of the storeroom and into a structured teaching sequence. Three pages cover the full arc: apparatus-based warm-ups, body-work skills — leaps, balances, pivots and flexibilities — and skill progressions for each piece of hand apparatus.
Rhythmic gymnastics earns its place in a PE program by developing what team sports often miss: coordination refined to the level of an object moving in time with the body, flexibility trained deliberately, and movement sequencing — students composing and performing routines rather than just executing drills. The unit's progressions scale from first-touch exploration to routine design, making it workable across Years 3–8.
Use it as a complete gymnastics unit, a rotation within a broader gymnastics program, or a creative-movement bridge into dance. Minimal setup beyond the apparatus itself, and the progressions give even gymnastics-shy teachers a clear teaching line to follow.
What students learn
Students explore rhythmic gymnastics through warm-ups, body-work skills (leaps, balances, pivots, flexibilities) and apparatus work with ropes, hoops, balls and ribbons, developing coordination, flexibility and routine-design skills.
