Read & React: Game-Sense Decision Cards

Category: Sport Skills · 2-page printable PDF · Ages 5-6, 7-8, 9-10 · Free for ConnectedPE members

Six tactical decision-making scenarios that train the invisible skill of invasion games: reading the play. Built on a Scan–Decide–Execute framework, the cards present situations from across basketball, netball, soccer, futsal, AFL, hockey, touch and water polo — students recognise space, pressure and numerical-advantage cues, then commit to a principled decision.

The peer-coaching companion is what makes it classroom-complete: a tactical vocabulary bank so students can talk about what they see, a four-level decision-making rubric, coach prompts, and an answer key. Decisions become discussable, assessable and improvable rather than instinctive and invisible. Mapped to AC9HP6M07, AC9HP8M07 and AC9HP10M07 across Years 5–10.

Two pages, print-and-go. Use the cards as lesson starters before game play, wet-weather tactical sessions, or the thinking layer inside any invasion-games unit — the sport-agnostic scenarios prove the principles transfer.

What students learn

Students apply a Scan-Decide-Execute framework to read tactical situations in invasion games, recognise space, pressure and numerical advantage cues, and make principled decisions under pressure. They use tactical vocabulary to coach peers and reflect on decision quality using a four-level rubric.
