Ocean Explorer: Swimming Challenge Progression Map

Category: Sport Skills · 4-page printable PDF · Ages F-2 · Free for ConnectedPE members

A self-paced, eight-level swimming progression map that takes Grade 2 explorers from front floats at the shoreline all the way to a full end-to-end stroke at the ocean trench. Each level is an ocean zone; each zone is a concrete, achievable challenge — and students chart their own voyage in the included Explorer Passport.

The progression is genuinely developmental: aligned body positions (front float, back float, streamline) establish buoyancy first, isolated patterns (flutter kick, freestyle and backstroke arm action) build propulsion next, and breathing synchronisation integrates everything into a continuous stroke at the deepest levels. Reflection prompts have students monitor their progress and choose their next challenge — self-directed learning in the pool, mapped to AC9HP2M02 and AC9HP2M03.

Four pages including a teacher coach guide with cues for every level. Built for school swimming programs where one teacher faces a pool of wildly mixed confidence levels — the map lets every explorer swim their own expedition.

What students learn

Students demonstrate aligned body positions (front float, back float, streamline) and understand how alignment affects buoyancy and propulsion; apply isolated and combined movement patterns (flutter kick, freestyle and backstroke arm action) to travel through water; synchronise breathing with stroke action to integrate body, kick, arms and breathing into a continuous stroke; and self-select appropriate challenge levels, monitor progress and reflect on their aquatic learning journey.

Topics: swimming, aquatics, water safety, progression map, freestyle, backstroke, flutter kick, floating, self-paced, Grade 2
