Coaching Styles Role Play
Category: Sport Skills · 4-page printable PDF · Ages 7-8, 9-10 · Free for ConnectedPE members
A role-play activity where pairs of students deliver a five-minute coaching session in an assigned style — authoritarian, co-operative or casual — while the group experiences first-hand how style shapes motivation, engagement and skill development.
Living the styles beats reading about them. The athlete on the receiving end of an authoritarian session *feels* the difference from a co-operative one, and the debrief converts that feeling into analysis: what did each style do to your effort, your confidence, your learning? Students finish able to articulate not just what the styles are, but when each is genuinely the right tool — safety briefings reward directness; creative tactical work rewards collaboration.
Four pages including role cards and reflection prompts, Years 7–10. Run it inside a coaching or leadership unit — it slots between Coaching Observation (watch it) and the Practical Coaching Activity (do it for real) in a complete coaching sequence.
What students learn
Students apply different coaching styles in a practical role-play, observe the impact of style on athlete experience, and articulate when each style is most effective.
