This is the story of the Sport in Education Project; an approach adopted by a group of New Zealand secondary schools to contribute to improved academic, social and sporting outcomes for schools and students by using sport as a context for learning and student engagement. Sport in Education is about creating powerful learning environments through combining sport as an engaging context, and effective teaching pedagogies found in physical education. An emphasis of the project has been on using cross-curricular approaches – theme based units of work, planned and delivered collaboratively by cross-curricular teaching teams, and using integrated assessment tasks.
