Before diving into tools and tactics, Jarrod walks through the evidence. What does research actually say about using video feedback for skill development and motor learning? The case is compelling — and it goes far beyond just 'students think it's cool.'
1. Motivation and Engagement
If nothing else, video feedback has been shown to have a real positive impact on student motivation. There's something inherently powerful about seeing yourself on screen — it creates a personal connection with the learning process that verbal feedback alone can't match.
If we had a tool that allowed us to get a greater level of motivation and engagement from students, it would probably be worth looking at on its own. And I constantly hear from teachers all over the globe who bring that same message — the students were really engaged by seeing themselves on screen.

2. Improving Technical Skills and Performance
Research across multiple sports and activities has shown that video feedback is an important tool for improving technical performance. If our goal as PE teachers is to develop skills and measure improvement, then incorporating a tool with a proven track record of helping people improve makes sense.

When students can see their own performance, they can reflect on it and become self-aware of their strengths and weaknesses. This capacity for self-reflection is, in Jarrod's view, one of the most important benefits of video feedback — independent of any technical improvements.
Just having students be able to see themselves and reflect on it has been proven to help them improve. I think that is, in its own right, one of the reasons why I continually talk about video feedback.

4. Better Teacher Feedback
Video doesn't just help students — it helps you as the teacher give better feedback. Instead of relying on a single real-time observation, you can review the performance and deliver more specific, objective critique. As Jarrod puts it: "If our job is giving feedback, then let's try and use the tools that allow us to give the best feedback."

This is a critical finding: research shows that reducing the delay between performance and feedback leads to better outcomes for motor development and skill acquisition. The shorter the gap, the better the learning.
Jarrod shares a vivid memory from the 1990s — his teacher recorded the class on a video camera, but it took weeks to see the footage because it had to be transferred to a cassette tape. While there may have been some benefit, the delay dramatically reduced the impact.
If you've got a tool that can show that student straight away, then it's going to perform much better than one that requires time. If you've got to go away and edit things or upload things, then I think you're missing out on some of the biggest wins that come from providing video feedback.

Video feedback enables students to mentally rehearse their motor skills at a higher rate than those who haven't used video alongside practice. Being able to see a correct (or incorrect) movement creates a visual reference point that supports visualisation and motor planning between attempts.

Video is inherently objective. There's no room for subjectivity or unconscious bias — you see exactly what happened. This is valuable both for teacher-led assessment and for student self-assessment, where the ability to review honest footage removes guesswork and enables genuine reflection.
Traditional Recording vs. Hands-Free Video Delay
If video feedback is so powerful, why aren't more PE teachers using it? The answer almost always comes down to logistics. During the session, audience members cited familiar challenges: too time-consuming, only one device, tedious to manage recordings, privacy concerns, and students not knowing how to edit.
Jarrod draws a clear distinction between two approaches:
Traditional Recording (Camera App / Phone)
- Pros: Full manual control, editable, archivable, works on any device
- Cons: Delayed feedback (press stop, rewind, press play), requires manual operation that interrupts practice flow, time-consuming to sort and review footage, takes teachers out of the classroom flow
Hands-Free Video Delay (Replay It)
- Pros: Feedback is instant and automatic, no buttons to press during activity, multiple screen views from different angles, encourages student autonomy, maximises practice time
- Cons: Requires Google Chrome browser, no saving of footage (but this is intentional — it's about real-time feedback, not archiving)
The key difference: a traditional approach requires someone to operate the technology during the lesson. A hands-free delay approach lets you set it up once and forget it — the feedback runs automatically while students focus on practice.

How Replay It Works: Three Clicks to Instant Feedback
Replay It is a Chrome extension — meaning it works on Chromebooks, Windows laptops, MacBooks, and any device running Chrome. Setup takes about 30 seconds:
- Choose your screens — Single screen, dual window (two different delay values), or quad screen
- Set the delay — Pick how many seconds of delay you want (e.g. 5, 10, or 20 seconds depending on the activity)
- Select your camera — Built-in camera or external device — then hit 'Start Delay'
That's it. The extension now shows a permanently delayed feed of whatever the camera sees. Students perform a skill, walk over to the screen, and see their performance from X seconds ago. No pressing record. No pressing stop. No rewinding. No saving.

Google Chrome is the leading web browser. It's across the most devices. Most classrooms, the leading device on hand is a Chromebook, a Windows machine, a MacBook — that's probably gonna cover most people. Even if you don't have students with their own devices, the teacher probably has one of these.

Three Ways to Use Video Delay in PE
Jarrod outlines three general implementation patterns that apply across virtually any sport, activity, or skill level:
1. The Hands-Free Feedback Loop
Set up a Chromebook or laptop with Replay It pointing towards the activity area — a tennis court, a basketball hoop, a gymnastics mat. Set a 10–20 second delay. Students perform the skill, then walk to the screen to see their performance. They observe, think about what to adjust, and go straight back to practice.

2. Self and Peer Assessment with Rubrics
Take the feedback loop one step further by adding a checklist or rubric. Students perform the skill, watch their delayed replay, and complete a self-assessment — ticking off criteria, noting observations, or scoring themselves against a rubric. On the next cycle, they focus on a different variable.
