Hoop Dive

To teach treading water, surface diving and underwater swimming

Hula Hoops

Depth of Water

  1. Working in groups of 8, half the group form a circle in the deep end holding a hula hoop between them and the next member. The hula hoops should float on the surface of the water.
  2. The remaining 4 swimmers must tread water inside of the floating hula hoops which are held in position by the inital 4 swimmers
  3. When the teacher says “move one spot”, each free swimmer does a feet first dive to clear the hoop and then swims underwater to the next one to the right, surfacing within it.
  4. This process is continued, however the teacher may specify a two or three spot change
